welcome

Erin Dreams
Welcome to Erin Dreams, where you may taste the beauty of Ireland's culture and countryside as we experienced it in one magical week.
Move your cursor over the map to the left, then click to select locations. A closer map and journal entry will load simultaneously. You may then listen to music, read about the area, or view a slideshow of the area. If you wish to follow our journey chronologically, begin with Dublin.

Travel Tips for Ireland

Most guidebooks have chapters of advice about packing, money, transportation, and so on. We won't repeat most of it, but here are a few tips.

1. Common advice is not to carry much cash in your wallet, but digging it out of a money belt can be awkward. If you find you need to dig for cash during the day, nip off to the restroom.

2. The ATM can be your friend, especially if you have a card associated with VISA. The exchange rate is favoeable, and you needn't carry as much cash. We found the risk of theft to be no different than at home.

3. Prices look the same as in California, until you remember the exchange rate. Figure your budget in dollars, then convert, then work out your daily limit in punts. When we were there, IRL5 meant about US$8.50.

4. Be prepared to face tobacco smoke. Non-smoking sections mostly don't exist. Ask quietly and politely to be seated away from smoke. When the option is available, eating outdoors is preferable most of the time. Keep your asthma inhaler near to hand, even if your asthma is only occasional.

5. Guidebooks will tell you that in the past tipping was not done in Ireland, but that this is changing. Whatever change is occurring, it's not in any consistent way. We tended to leave tips tucked so they wouldn't be encountered until we were gone. We brought postcards from home and used them to leave thank you notes at our B&Bs saying, "Thank you for looking after us."

6. Laundry can either be done either do-it-yourself or left with the laundry service. Phone ahead to the laundrette and ask about which way it's done there, and whether do-it-yourself has different hours. Be sure to remove pins, badges, loose buttons, etc. and to empty your pockets before leaving your laundry with a service.

7. The two hour check-in before International flights doesn't necessarily apply when it's an early morning flight. Call ahead and find out what time your check-in counter opens, then plan to arrive a little before that.

8. Remember your dreams, but enjoy your unfolding reality. Have a wonderful trip.
